Omental infarction: a rare cause of acute abdominal pain.
Omental infarction is an uncommon but important cause of acute abdominal pain, which frequently mimics other surgical presentations. The current series describes five cases of idiopathic omental torsion and infarction and provides a review of the literature. We discuss the diagnosis of primary omental infarction as well as the role of conservative and surgical management.
متن کاملIdiopathic omental infarction: One for conservative or surgical management?
Idiopathic omental infarction (IOI) is a rare cause of right-sided abdominal pain, mimicking serious surgical pathology. It occurs in <4 in 1000 cases of appendicitis. IOI can be a challenge to diagnose, as features may mimic appendicitis, and therefore in young patients, may only be discovered on laparoscopy. CT features can be diagnostic, but due to its rarity the diagnosis may be unclear. Th...
متن کاملOmental infarction: a reappraisal of conservative management in children.
INTRODUCTION Accurate recognition of omental infarction has resulted in increasing supporters of non-operative approach. In order to assess the efficacy and safety of conservative management, we surveyed the cases of omental infarction treated at a single institution. MATERIAL AND METHODS Primary omental infarction treated between 2004 and 2011 were reviewed. Cases recognized by imaging studi...
متن کاملAcute Abdomen due to Primary Omental Torsion and Infarction
Background. Torsion of greater omentum is a quite uncommon cause of acute abdomen. It can be primary or secondary but in both cases omentum twists upon itself and causes omental segmentary or diffuse necrosis. Symptoms are unspecific and preoperative diagnosis is difficult. The widespread and increasing use of computer tomography (CT) in differential diagnosis of acute abdomen can be useful for...
متن کاملOmental infarction in the postpartum period: a case report and a review of the literature

CASE PRESENTATION This is a case report of a 26-year-old Caucasian woman with spontaneous omental infarction two weeks after normal vaginal delivery. CONCLUSION Omental infarction is a differential diagnosis in the postpartum acute a...
متن کاملPrimary Omental Torsion in an Old Woman: Imaging Techniques Can Prevent Unnecessary Surgical Interventions
Torsion and/or infarction of the greater omentum are rare but well-recognized clinical situations which present as an acute abdomen. The etiology is unknown and speculative. In most cases, the pathology is right sided and clinical presentation consists of an acute or subacute flank pain with mild peritonism usually evoking appendicitis or cholecystitis. Nevertheless, knowledge concerning these ...
